STAYING YOUNG

Yoga opens up our joints, creating space in the shut down or compressed areas of old injuries, and making room for circulation of intracellular fluids, carrying nutrition in and toxins out. This has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, which is an added health benefit that may very well be the most important of all. Inflammation is one of the greatest contributors to aging, taking a toll on all the systems of the body. The conventional wisdom is that if we can prevent and stop inflammation, we can prevent and stop the signs of aging, or at least slow it down.

I can think of three basic ways to do this and the yoga lifestyle pops up in all of them. The first is through appropriate physical movement — and asana serves us as some of the most suitable movement going. Yoga may not be aerobic in the way that running is, but it is aerobic in that yoga is practiced “in the presence of oxygen,” which is the definition of “aerobic.” It does strengthen our heart and lungs, and it doesn’t have the detrimental effect of the pounding, that is associated with running, which tends to create inflammation.

The second way is through some form of stress management, like breathing and meditation, and again we find the yoga methodology playing an important role, which I will discuss in chapters 7 and 8.

Lastly, a nourishing, anti-inflammatory diet is critical in keeping us young, healthy, and active, and the yogic pattern of eating has long advocated the anti-inflammatory benefits of whole foods — prepared from scratch — such as organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes, and essential fatty acids.
